Editorial standards

How we report, and what you can hold us to.

Accuracy first

We check every number, date and quotation against a primary source where one exists: regulators, official gazettes, company filings and statistics agencies. Where we rely on another news outlet, we name it and link to it.

If two sources disagree, we say so, or we leave the figure out until we can confirm it.

Dates on every figure

Energy prices change quickly. Every figure on our market figures page and in our stories carries the date it applies to, so you can judge whether it is still current.

Plain language

We write for a reader who is smart but busy and not an energy specialist. We explain technical terms the first time we use them, and we keep a glossary of the rest.

Independence

Advertisers and sponsors have no say over what we cover or how. Sponsored content, if we carry it, will be clearly labelled as such and kept separate from our reporting.

Not financial advice

We report on markets and prices to help readers understand them. Nothing we publish is investment advice.

Corrections

When we get something wrong, we fix it and say so at the foot of the story. See our corrections policy.
